Ambachew Mekonen will replace Worqneh Gebeyehu as Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, multiple sources told Ethiopia Observer.

The current Minister of Industry will represent Ethiopia abroad on the world stage.

Ambachew, who has been elected as central committee member of the Amhara Democratic Party (ADP) two weeks ago, had previously served as Minister for Urban Development and Housing (MUDHo).

Ambachew has earned a master’s degree in public policy in 2000 from the Korea Development Institute School of Public Policy and Management and his Ph.D in Economics from Kent University, U.K.

Worqneh is to leave, after presiding over a 23-month-long the foreign ministry and might assume a new role as a special advisor in the National Security Council.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed would replace a handful of cabinet of ministers this week, in a step that would push through major political and economic change.  The cabinet revamp would downsize executive organs from 28 to 20, according to Fitsum Arega, Chief of Staff at the Prime Minister’s Office.
